The Sound and the Fury. Novels

William Faulkner is the greatest American writer of the 20th century, awarded the Nobel Prize for his unique contribution to the development of the modern American novel. This collection presents Faulkner's early works that provide a "key" to the writer's creativity. "The Soldier's Pay" is Faulkner's first major novel. The plot centers on the story of a young pilot who returns from Europe to his home in rural America after the end of World War I. "Sartoris," published three years later, resonates with "The Soldier's Pay" in its theme of post-war America.

Many characters first appear here, who will show up in Faulkner's later works. The setting for most of them takes place in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County in the southern United States, in Mississippi, where Faulkner spent a significant part of his life. The novel "The Sound and the Fury" brought Faulkner worldwide fame and became a classic of modernist literature.

This is one of the peaks of the writer's creativity, as well as Faulkner's beloved offspring, in which, as the author writes, "there is perhaps the only thing that can seriously take hold of my soul as a writer."
