An outstanding documentary novel that has rightfully gained worldwide popularity. A book about how politics invades a person's personal life, and about the yearning for freedom that cannot be extinguished. A true story filled with striking details - an inside look at existence in a pariah country.
Azaar Nafisi, the daughter of the former mayor of Tehran, who was educated in America, returns to her homeland to teach foreign literature to Iranian students. The Islamic revolution crushes all plans, and classes turn into secret gatherings. While the guardians of order conduct raids across the country, fundamentalists seize universities, and censorship stifles art, the girls visiting Nafisi boldly remove their hijabs and enthusiastically immerse themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Vladimir Nabokov. The "shaky unreality" of what is happening transforms into a dazzling celebration of love for literature.
