The panorama of Athens is one of the most recognizable and symbolically rich among all the cities in the world: the columns and pediments of the Parthenon—crowning the Acropolis, the temple dedicated to the goddess of wisdom Athena—dominate the city, the name of which many consider synonymous with the word "civilization." The significance of Athens—as the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, and theater—is simply impossible to deny. Few cities have a history so rich in artistic creativity and innovative ideas and so interspersed with alternating periods of upheaval and tranquility. In Bruce Clark's narrative, the epic, kaleidoscopic history of the city—from the legal reforms of the legislator Solon, who lived in the 6th century BC, to the trials that befell Athens in the early 21st century due to the consequences of the economic crises of the 2000s—emerges as alive in all its cultural richness and political significance.
"When Western schoolchildren are introduced to world history, they are often told that civilization owes a great deal to events that took place on two rocky highlands in different parts of the Eastern Mediterranean. Despite the similarities, the significance of these places is understood in very different ways. One of them is the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, considered the cradle of monotheism, while the other is the Athenian Acropolis, where the precious monuments are seen as evidence of human reason, skill, and freedom. My book is dedicated to one of these highlands and the civilization that arose around it, although the currents that began in these two places ultimately intertwined." (Bruce Clark)
