Richard Pipes (1923 – 2018) was a renowned historian who authored several dozen books on Russia. The main theme of his research was the peculiarities of Russian history, determined by the geography and climate of our country, and in this regard, the differences between Russian civilization and Western civilization. This book describes the formation and development of the Moscow Kingdom, which for more than two hundred years grew by an average of 35,000 square kilometers per year. How did this, along with climatic and geographical conditions, influence the political, economic, and social frameworks of Russian life, and why did Russian civilization become a "civilization of special purpose"? R. Pipes illustrates all of this in his comprehensive book, based on a larger number of various sources.
