Animals such as woolly mammoths, saber-toothed cats that hunted in packs, giant sloths, enormous armadillos, and opossums roaming across vast snowy fields were typical for the fauna of the ice age.
However, the animal world during the period of Earth's history known as the Pleistocene was characterized by much greater diversity. In the plains of Europe and Asia grazed rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, deer, and gazelles, ancient species of elephants, wild horses, and giant tortoises. They became prey to cave lions, giant leopards, and cave hyenas. All these animals are represented in this book.
This book also examines herbivores and large predators from other continents and describes the hunting strategies of the largest wolf in history, the so-called dire wolf, in North America; the largest representative of saber-toothed cats, Smilodon, in South America; the giant crocodile, Crocodylus thornicrofti, in Africa; the largest lizard, Megalania, in Australia; and the record-sized ancient shark, Megalodon, in the oceans.
This edition, with stunning illustrations, presents the authentic ice age.
