«Quarteron» — a novel by Thomas Mayne Reid about love and adventures set against the backdrop of the American South — keeps the reader in suspense from the very first pages. Young Englishman Edward falls in love with an extraordinarily beautiful and intelligent girl, Aurora, during his travels in Louisiana. To his delight, the feeling is mutual, but there is a serious obstacle between the young people: Edward's beloved is a slave. Aurora is a quarteron, meaning she is one-quarter black, but even if she had only a drop of black blood, the laws and morals of Louisiana make her union with a white person impossible. Yet Edward is not willing to give up his happiness with his beloved — for her, he is even ready to break the law... The young man does not suspect that his determination is not to everyone's liking. He will face the treachery and cruelty of his enemies and will often look death in the face. However, friendship and selfless love will overcome all obstacles... The book is illustrated with drawings by Sergey Yarovoy.
