Rebecca

A young companion to a capricious elderly American woman becomes the wife of the imposing English aristocrat Maximilian de Winter, tormented by a secret sorrow, and arrives with him at his ancestral estate Manderley. In the huge, gloomy mansion, both people and walls, and seemingly the very air, remind the new mistress of her deceased predecessor – the beautiful and refined Rebecca de Winter.

The strange behavior of her husband, the wariness, and at times hostility of the staff, along with the general veiled hints clearly aimed at concealing the secret of Maximilian's first wife's death, cause the heroine to tremble.

After several months of painful experiences, she comes to learn the carefully hidden truth about the past inhabitants of Manderley… The novel "Rebecca" (1938), which made the name of English writer Daphne du Maurier world-famous, was almost immediately adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock upon its release, and decades later, gaining the status of a classic of the 20th century and receiving flattering comparisons to Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre," spawned several sequels and adaptations, including Susan Hill's "Mrs. de Winter," Maureen Freely's "Another Rebecca," and Sally Beaumont's "The Story of Rebecca."
