Lizzie Young is unlike others. Six-year-old Hugh Biggs realized this when he first saw her on the school bus. She doesn't wear fancy bows in her hair like the other girls and doesn't look away when you catch her gaze. And for some reason, you just want to be around her and not go anywhere. No matter what happens. And a lot happens: frighteningly sharp mood swings, memory lapses, voices that only she hears...
Hugh Biggs is not like others. He is the only one who believes every word Lizzie says. The only one who always stays close, even if he can't help. Like a knight in shining armor, he carves a path to the real her through all the disarray and breakdowns.
But the years go by, and childhood vows shatter against adult pain. After all, when the storm inside grows to overwhelming proportions, those who are closest are hit the hardest. The most beloved. And it seems there is only one way to protect them - to let go...
