Leo Tolstoy (1828 — 1910) — a classic of world literature, the greatest master of psychology, the creator of the epic novel genre, a thinker and one of the most famous writers in the world. His literary legacy consists of 90 volumes of artistic and journalistic works, diary notes, and letters.
The story "The Captive of the Caucasus" is about Russian officers Zhilin and Kostyelin held captive by the mountaineers and is partly based on real events that happened to L.N. Tolstoy during his service in the Caucasus.
The story "The Snowstorm" is narrated from the author's perspective, who, while near Novocherkassk, gets into a sleigh and, along with the coachman and a boy named Alyoshka, sets off from the station. A snowstorm begins. After a quarter of an hour, the travelers lose the trace of the road. Having wandered for some time without finding a single milestone, they decide to turn back.
