Mirgorod

«Mirgorod» — a collection of stories showing how the familiar way of life cracks at the seams.

If «Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka» were light and cheerful, here Gogol showed a world where behind laughter lies anxiety.

In «Mirgorod», peace and storm coexist: the idyll of «The Old World Landlords» and the tragedy of «Taras Bulba», the mystical horror of «Viy» and the absurd quarrel between Ivan Ivanovich and Ivan Nikiforovich. These stories gradually lead to a feeling of loss, after which only regret remains: «It’s boring in this world, gentlemen!».
