Ada Flint's Inquisition

London, the early 19th century. After the sudden death of William Flint, the overseer of the Norton-Folgate district, his wife Ada is left alone with a whole brood of children. By grace, the widow is appointed an investigator at the city administration — a job that is difficult and dreary, but Ada tries to perform it conscientiously. And when the body of an eight-year-old girl is discovered in an abandoned stable, Ada is determined to find out who the little girl was and who her parents are. However, the mysteries multiply, the investigation repeatedly hits dead ends, and Ada is forced to seek help from an old friend, artist Rafael Da Silva…
Tessa Morris-Suzuki's exquisite stylization immerses the reader in the gloomy atmosphere of Georgian London, where love borders on madness, and happiness coexists with misery.
