Kandinsky & Münter. The Power of Color and Fateful Love

Alice Brauner and Heike Gronemeyer richly and atmospherically narrate the meeting, life, and breakup of one of the most famous couples in 20th-century art – Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter. This partnership, productive for creativity, was personally destructive. Gabriele had to travel the path from a lovestruck student through codependent relationships to liberation from the shadow of her mentor and lover.

The co-authors show the significant role that the talented and hardworking Gabriele Münter played in the discoveries realized by Kandinsky in painting and art theory, as well as in the creation of the art collective "Blue Rider." The influence of Münter and other girlfriends of male artists was ignored both by her colleagues in the collective and by researchers. The book makes a substantial correction to the history of one of the most vibrant phenomena in 20th-century art.
