The Slave Girl Izaura

A touching story of a slave girl who had to go through many trials before gaining long-awaited freedom and happiness with her beloved person is well known around the world.

The novel by Brazilian writer Bernard Guimarães (1875), infused with the pathos of defending human dignity, struck readers at the time with the sharpness and relevance of its theme: slavery in Brazil was abolished only thirteen years after the publication of the novel. Under the influence of the book and the deep sympathy for its main character, many Brazilian families named their daughters Izaura. A hundred years later, the novel by Bernard Guimarães became the basis for a television series (1976), which was successfully shown in different countries. Since then, the novel "The Slave Girl Izaura" has become a cult classic: readers are attracted not only by the accurately depicted life and morals of provincial Brazil in the mid-19th century but also by the happy ending – the triumph of a pure and noble soul.
