Sex Was. Intimate Life of the Soviet Union

Soviet workers of the 1920s discuss pollutions. Miners of the 1960s are interested in petting. Girls from Arkhangelsk are judged for romances with foreigners in the 1940s. The Moscow Festival of Youth and Students becomes a local sexual revolution. Based on archival materials, memoirs, and medical records, historian Rustam Alexander created a comprehensive picture of the sexual life in the USSR. All stories are united by a common plot about how the bans on abortion, the lack of enlightenment, and the imposition of hypocritical puritanism lead to an increase in ignorance, violence, and mortality. And how, despite this, people find the courage within a totalitarian system to call for the liberalization of laws, sex education, and open discussions about sexuality.
