The Youth of King Henry IV

Pierre Alexis de Ponson du Terrail (1829–1871) was a French novelist. The writer gained the greatest popularity after the publication of his stories about Rocambole. The saga of this robber's adventures became so popular that the word rocambolesque – "incredible", "in the style of Rocambole" – became established in the French language. Terrail had other cycles as well: among them, for example, "The Youth of King Henry IV". The narrative centers around a young and charming French monarch who finds himself in exciting adventures. This edition presents the first book of the series – "The Beautiful Jeweler". It begins a story full of reckless bravery, unparalleled nobility, beautiful love, and clever intrigues. Henri Lano (1859–1929) was a French watercolorist, caricaturist, and prose writer. The graphic illustrations, executed with fine strokes, reflect the twists and turns of the plot and reproduce the interiors and costumes of that time in detail.
