Empty Houses

This psychologically profound and extraordinarily beautiful novel, reinterpreting notions of motherhood, has become a literary sensation in the Spanish-speaking world. The events of "Empty Houses" unfold after a child's disappearance. The boy Daniel has been kidnapped, and the family, in despair, is trying to find him. But what if his mother, experiencing incredible pain and feeling guilt, does not know everything about herself? What if parenthood is not for her at all? At the same time, on the other side of Mexico City, in a poor neighborhood, a woman who has desperately longed to be a mother all her life realizes that she is ready to commit any crime for Daniel. Fearless female voices alternate, conveying an extraordinarily complex spectrum of emotions provoked by attachments, losses, desires, and the search for self.
