Brodskii believed that Igor Efimov "continues the great tradition of Russian philosopher-writers, which traces its roots back to Herzen." And now, having published a dozen novels and half a dozen philosophical books, Efimov wrote his version of "Bygone and Thoughts." From the first volume of his memoirs - "In the Old World" - the reader learns that his life in Russia was guided by the slogan "don't believe, don't be afraid, don't ask" long before this slogan was coined by Solzhenitsyn. Even in school years, he did not believe the newspaper and radio propaganda - only in Pushkin, Lermontov, and Tolstoy. And he was not afraid to stand up for a comrade, who was threatened with execution. And for the persecuted poet, a future Nobel laureate. He was not afraid to distribute prohibited literature and publish abroad at a time when it could lead to up to seven years in labor camps... Efimov was lucky - he lived to see the return of his books to Russia.
