The Prince. On the Art of War

Philosopher and thinker Niccolò Machiavelli, without whom it is impossible to imagine Italy during the Renaissance, may not have left as bright a mark as his active, energetic contemporaries - representatives of the Borgia and Medici clans. A scion of a not wealthy lawyer, the future author of «The Prince» never ceased to learn, educated himself to a university level, and during the era of military coups, fragile alliances, and skillful intrigues remained a bookish person, building a career as a bureaucrat and leading a predominantly clerical life. His influence on the culture and philosophy of the Renaissance, and through them on all political history, was more profound. The position of an observer among the powerful of his time provided him with inexhaustible material for reflection, which Machiavelli articulated in his characteristic brevity and precision in his written works. The accuracy of his historical assessments earned him the reputation of being almost the official chronicler of his explosive era, which continues to stir minds, and his keen political intuition, deep knowledge of military affairs, and the art of state governance gave the world, in his person, one of the key figures in political science.
The proposed edition includes two main works by Niccolò Machiavelli - «The Prince» (1513) and «On Military Art» (1519-1520).
