The individuality of faces is a subject that is interesting to everyone, especially to those who have even a slight talent for drawing. As soon as we begin to understand the reasons for the differences in faces, this topic becomes all-consuming. Faces not only distinguish us but also say a lot about each of us. Thoughts, emotions, worldview, and even our way of life are captured on our faces. The mobility of flesh – in other words, facial expressions – gives the face more than just uniqueness.
I will say right away: you do not need the ability to "look into the soul" or read minds to draw a head well. What is primarily needed is the correct interpretation of shapes in proportions, perspective, and lighting. All other qualities appear in the drawing as a result of interpreting the form. If the artist has accurately captured it, then the "soul," or character, will reveal itself. It is also very important for an artist to be able to convincingly draw hands, and my book contains material on this topic as well. Andrew Loomis
