This Obscure Object of Desire

The French poet and writer Pierre Louÿs is well known to lovers of sensual poetry and prose. We present to the reader two of his works — «Aphrodite. Ancient Customs» and «The Woman and the Puppet».
The brilliant and scandalous «Aphrodite» made the 26-year-old author famous and has undergone at least a hundred reprints in his homeland.
The author's most famous novel, «The Woman and the Puppet», has stirred generations of readers. On the pages free from conventions, sensual love lives in all its manifestations. The book has been adapted for film many times, including by the great Luis Buñuel under the title «That Obscure Object of Desire».
«Sometimes we desire desire itself; we enjoy being in this state that elevates us above the flatness of everyday life». J.-K. Huysmans
The book presents the complete unadapted text of the works in the original language.
