Counterfeiters / Les Faux-Monnayeurs

The novel "Counterfeiters" is one of the most significant works of existential French prose of the 19th century. Its author, Nobel laureate André Gide, bestowed each character with a complex fate, and through the innovative technique of "the novel within a novel," he introduced the diaries of the writer Édouard with reflections on an unwritten novel with a similar title. The author, torn between the contradictions of the sensual and the spiritual, confessed to the reader. Where is reality, and where is imagination, what is exquisite yet immoral, and what is genuine yet ugly?
