The Sorrows of Young Werther / Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers

The book includes the classic novel «The Sorrows of Young Werther» by Johann Wolfgang Goethe and his selected poetry.

«The Sorrows of Young Werther» (1774) — a sentimental epistolary novel that brought Goethe world fame. It is the story of a young man, enthusiastically and hopelessly in love with a girl who is engaged to another. Young Werther pours out his feelings in letters to his friend Wilhelm. The sufferings of platonic love and the impossibility of being near Lotte push the hero closer and closer to the abyss. The novel in some way reflected events from Goethe's life: the writer spoke of his love for Charlotte Buff, whom he met in 1772, and the tragic ending of the novel was linked to the death of his friend, who was in love with a married woman.

The book features an unadapted text in the original language, accompanied by comments and a dictionary. The edition is intended for students of language universities and all lovers of the German language and literature.
