From the pen of Jane Austen emerged the most romantic couples and the wittiest heroines of fiction. With remarkable observation, great skill, and subtle English humor, Jane Austen describes the life and manners of the provincial society of her time. "Northanger Abbey" is her most mischievous book, a graceful irony on the canons of the romance novel. Catherine's parents are not very rich, but certainly not poor. She is not very beautiful, but not ugly either. Catherine is naive, but only due to a lack of life experience. She adores gothic novels, and her entire life, as she believes, is filled with dark mysteries and enigmas. It is only through love that the heroine gains a new perspective on reality, unveiling previously unknown aspects of life.
