“Members of the royal family cannot afford to make mistakes. Between feelings and duty, they must always choose the latter, unhesitatingly sacrificing their own interests for the good of the monarchy. However, as history shows, in every generation of Windsors, there are rebels who go against established norms and cause a great deal of trouble for their families. These antagonists become the 'spare' princes and princesses, who appoint themselves to the roles of the main 'villains' since the roles of positive 'heroes' are already taken. But did Margaret really have no choice but to become an anti-hero? “In his new book, royal biographer Andrew Morton tries to find the answer to this question while maintaining the objectivity of the narrative. Referring to documentary evidence and the memories of those close to the royal family, he carefully reconstructs the dynamics of Elizabeth and Margaret's relationship — first through the eyes of one sister, then the other. Thus, the pendulum of reader sympathy constantly shifts, making one alternately sympathize with Elizabeth and then with Margaret. Until the very last page, the author manages to maintain this balance and captivate the audience with a wealth of intriguing plot twists. This is an incredible work in terms of depth and literary skill.” — Maria Tyumerina, editor of marieclaire.ru
