A mystical and mysterious story about the headless horseman, appearing here and there in the Texas prairies, stirs the imagination of more than one generation of readers. The secret love of the beautiful aristocrat Louise Poindexter and the poor mustanger Maurice Gerald, the disappearance of Louise's beloved brother, and the sudden appearance of the mysterious horseman, jealousy, rivalry, and retribution – all intertwine in a intricate knot of complex relationships among the characters against the backdrop of the endless plains and the hot sky of South Texas. Thomas Mayne Reid wrote this novel, recalling his own adventures in America, where he lived for ten years, befriended Edgar Allan Poe, worked as a trading agent, actor, teacher, and journalist, and was even wounded in battle. The novel "The Headless Horseman" brought the author not only a large fee but also worldwide fame, and it is still considered one of the main examples of adventure literature.
